SHARE.ICS #11 | Bi-monthly meetings of ICS doctoral students
The SHARE meetings are bi-monthly seminars created, coordinated, and held by doctoral students enrolled in the third cycle of studies in history, archiology and geography of the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Minho / Lab2PT. Besides being an opportunity for doctorate students to meet, each session enables a doctoral student to present the progress of their research and receive contributions from their peers.
SHARE.ICS #11 Santos Garcia Simão | THE ARCHIVE AS A SPACE OF POWER AND DOMINATION: a case study on the documentary production of the General Secretariat of Angola (1922-1975)
The theme of my Ph.D. project revolves around the archive as a space of power. The project aims to analyse the administrative dynamics of the Portuguese colonial empire, conveyed through the production of documents in various formats. This study involves the historian examining on one hand, the archaeology of the main documentation nuclei and, on the other hand, deconstructing the motivations and logics underlying its construction. The empirical focus of the study is on the collection of the General Secretariat of Angola (1922-1975), which is dispersed between the National Archives of Angola (ANA) and the Overseas Historical Archive (AHU). This research is part of the doctoral program in History, specifically within the field of Contemporary History. The project commences with a critical analysis of the chosen theme: “Archival heritage of the General Secretariat of Angola (1922-1975): a study around the interactive logics of colonial knowledge.” It concentrates on two central disciplinary domains: History and Archival Science from a heritage perspective.
