SHARE.ICS#19 | Diogo Marinho |Traces of the Past in a Changing Landscape: Segmented Circles of the Northwestern Iberian Peninsula
The SHARE meetings are bi-monthly seminars created, coordinated, and held by doctoral students enrolled in the third cycle of studies in history, archaeology and geography of the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Minho / Lab2PT. Besides being an opportunity for doctorate students to meet, each session enables a doctoral student to present the progress of their research and receive contributions from their peers.
SHARE.ICS #19 Diogo Marinho |Traces of the Past in a Changing Landscape: Segmented Circles of the Northwestern Iberian Peninsula
Abstract:
The main objective of this project is to study the engraved segmented circles of a significant part of the Iberian Northwest, in interaction with the settlement and the physical environment, for a better understanding of the socio-ideological dynamics of Bronze Age communities.
To achieve these objectives, premises from Post-Procedural Archaeology and Anthropology of Art and methodologies from Space Archaeology and Archaeoastronomy will be used, in addition to the use of a Geographic Information System.
This unprecedented work aims to assess the possibility that these recorded places are, simultaneously, sanctuaries to celestial entities and astronomical observatories, providing better knowledge about the interrelationships of communities with the physical terrestrial and celestial space.
The data will be scientifically disseminated in several languages (Portuguese, Spanish and English). They will also be made publicly available so that the general public, territory managers, teachers and students can be active in safeguarding and enhancing this heritage.
