Participatory Archaeology and Living Heritage: Practices and Challenges in Portugal and Galicia

Increasingly, society is aware that its identity is built on what we were in the past and what we are in the present. And increasingly, we are aware that only a society that builds its values in community, counting on the largest possible number of actors, will be able to conceive solid futures.
Since 2014, Europe has been betting on the management of its heritage based on the concept of participatory governance, a concept that implies knowledge, implies action, implies commitment and joint work.
In this journey, we want to discuss, based on different projects guided by the paradigms of community archaeology, heritage education and action research, how we can approach archaeological work through collaboration between academia, local agents and citizens. Through a dialogue with the researchers responsible for four projects located in Boticas, Extremo or Ródão, in Portugal, and Babia, in Spain, we will highlight the paradigm shift in the research, management and valorization of heritage.
The session will be in a hybrid format (in person and online).
In-person participants will be able to take part in a guided tour of the Terva Valley Archaeological Park (PAVT), led by Luís Fontes. Online participation will be via Zoom (link sent after registration).
Participation is free, subject to prior registration: HERE
This event is coordinated and attended by Lab2PT/IN2PAST researchers Rebeca Blanco-Rotea, Luís Fontes, Telmo Pereira and Manuela Martins.
