IN2PAST at the Imaterial Festival, within the scope of the In2Future Boot Camp and in partnership with Évora 27
17 to 25 of May 2024 | Évora
The IN2PAST is a partner of the Imaterial Festival 2024, which takes place in Évora, from May 17 to 25. The Associated Laboratory for Research and Innovation in Heritage, Arts, Sustainability and Territory co-organizes three conversations, on 19, 22 and 24 May, on the heritage of music, sustainable futures and the ecology of heritage practices. The sessions are part of the program of the first Doctoral School of the IN2PAST, In2Future Boot Camp, which brings together more than 40 doctoral students in Évora in the same week of the festival and which has the partnership of Évora 27 – European Capital of Culture.
On May 19, at 6 pm, the Noble Hall of the Garcia de Resende Theatre will host the conference by the researcher from CESEM – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST Paulo Ferreira de Castro “Music and the idea of heritage”, which will be presented and commented by Ana Telles Béreau (CESEM – University of Évora / IN2PAST). As part of the Doctoral Cycle of Conversations of the IN2PAST, the meeting aims to promote a reflection on the theoretical, historical, social, anthropological and political complexity of the concept of heritage, as well as the multiple implications of the processes of patrimonialization in the production, preservation, diffusion, (re-)signification and valorization of different musical practices.

“Bridging Heritage and Future: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Sustainable Futures” is the title of the conversation with Paul Dujardin, former artistic director of Bozar (Palace of Fine Arts in Brussels) and Commissioner-General for Heritage Policy in the Brussels-Capital Region, and António Candeias (HERCULES – University of Évora / IN2PAST), on the morning of the 22nd, at 10 am, in the Auditorium of the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation (Centre for Art and Culture). The aim is to create an inclusive dialogue between stakeholders, the participants of the Imaterial Festival and the PhD students, illuminating the critical interconnections between contemporary philosophy, heritage conservation and the avant-garde principles of the New European Bauhaus narrative, without losing sight of the pressing challenges posed by the global ecological crisis.

At the end of the 24th, we return to the Noble Hall of the Garcia de Resende Theatre, at 6 pm, for the public presentation of the results of the boot camp, in a session called “Heritage Anarchives in Évora: Towards an Ecology of Practices”. With the participation of the researcher from CRIA – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST Pedro Antunes and the researcher from HERCULES – University of Évora / IN2PAST Anna Tsoupra, coordinators of the Working Group for Doctoral Training of the associated laboratory, the conversation with the audience of the Imaterial Festival will be launched by short presentations by doctoral students about the work developed over the past week in Évora.

About the Immaterial Festival
Imaterial was born as a result of UNESCO’s attribution of the status of Intangible Heritage of Humanity to the Alentejo cante, the greatest musical expression of the Alentejo region. Held annually in Évora, whose historic centre is a World Heritage Site, it is much more than a music festival, reinforcing the certainty that borders (political, geographical, cultural) are no more than imaginary lines and that differences, when they exist, they should be a cause for delight and not for distrust. The 2024 edition will take place from 17 to 25 May 2024
About Évora 27 – European Capital of Culture
In 2027, Évora, and the Alentejo, will be European Capital of Culture, representing Portugal in the largest cultural event in Europe. The motto of Évora_27 is the affirmation of VAGAR as another art of existence for Humanity. Based on three thematic lines – Time, Space and Matter – , the cultural and artistic program of Évora 2027 crosses art and science, artists and audiences, local and global, to launch urgent questions about the future of Humanity, based on the concept of VAGAR, and its unfolding in multiple dimensions.
