On the nature and causes of artists’ autonomy – 2024 Edition
The event “On the nature and causes of artists’ autonomy” is proposed in a line of continuity and expansion of the 1st Edition held in October 2023. It is part of Lab2PT’s activities and has the research group LIDA as its institutional partner. – Research Laboratory in Design and Arts, at the Higher School of Arts and Design (ESAD) of the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria.
The initiative aims to problematize the visual artist’s economy and the way in which their financial reality determines their performance and production. More specifically, it aims to discuss the nature(s) and cause(s) of the economic reality of the visual artist in the Portuguese context and, with this, promote reflection on their power of cultural, social and political action.
The first part of the event includes a Workshop led by Flávia Vieira and a Masterclass with Art Advisor Marc Arrañaga.
WORKSHOP- The artist’s economy: modes of communication and financing channels
Promotion: Flávia Vieira, visual artist and guest assistant professor at EAAD.
The Workshop Economy of the artist: modes of communication and financing channels, aimed at students, is divided into two parts – Production of communication materials for the artist and Professional, logistical and financial support structures for the artist, having The objective is to offer practical tools for the artist’s autonomy. In the first part, we intend to explore the production of communication materials for artistic practice (portfolio, artist statement, room sheet and technical sheet). In the second part, the aim is to share professional, logistical and financial support structures and channels available in the Portuguese context (public and private support notices, artistic residencies and academic specialization – masters and doctorates).
11 June – 10 am – 1 pm – Production of artist communication materials: Promotion of a workshop on how to produce communication materials for artistic practice (portfolio, artist statement, classroom sheet and technical sheet).
11 June – 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm – Professional, logistical and financial support structures for the artist: Promotion of a workshop on professional, logistical and financial support structures and channels (public and private support notices, artistic residencies and academic specialization – masters and doctorates) available in the Portuguese context.
MASTERCLASS – Art and Market
Marc Arrañaga
The Art and Market Masterclass with North American Art Advisor Marc Arrañaga is aimed at students and aims to discuss the relationship between art and the market, understanding its mechanisms and operating strategies, and making its main agents or participants known.
Biographies:
Flávia Vieira is a visual artist and her work develops from the cultural, historical and political narratives inherent to the artisanal process, exploring
exploring notions of identity, memory and collective representation, botanical diaspora and otherness. She has a degree from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto (2006), a Master’s degree in Communication and Arts from the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the Nova University of Lisbon (2012) and a PhD in Visual Poetics and Creation Processes from the Institute of Arts at Unicamp in São Paulo, Brazil (2019).
He has presented his work in several exhibitions such as “Brasilina” at KUBIKGallery (Porto), “Pandã” at Auroras (São Paulo), “Hopes and Fears” at KUBIKGallery (Porto), “Obscura Luz” at Galeria Luisa Strina (São Paulo ), “Impluvium” at Galeria Ángeles Baños (Badajoz), “Form der Unruhe”, at MOM Art Space (Hamburg), among others.
She participated in the artistic residencies Matadero Madrid X ArtWorks-Madrid (2023) and Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado-São Paulo (2014).
She is currently a guest professor at the School of Architecture, Art and Design at the University of Minho.
Marc Arrañaga is an Art Advisor and works in the areas of contemporary art consultancy, curation, career advice and management for artists and management of private and institutional collections.
He holds a BA in Art History from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a PhD in Art History from the City University of New York – Graduate Center, focusing on the history of photography, contemporary art, and Renaissance art.
His work is developed essentially in New York, Los Angeles and California, having collaborated with galleries such as Pace Gallery (NY), Roberts Projects (CA), institutions such as The Guggenheim Museum (NY) and at trade fairs. art like Art Basel Miami Beach, EXPO Chicago, Zona Maco or The Armony Show.
With extensive experience in the art market, he closely followed the work of artists such as Jeffrey Gibson, Betye Saar, Kehinde Wiley, Tara Donovan, Fred Wilson, Jim Dine, among others.
He currently lives and works in Porto, Portugal.
