The project Paraíso, hoje. (Portuguese Pavilion at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale) critically explores the contemporary world as a ‘paradise’, given that we live in the best conditions ever, driven by access to advanced technologies. However, inequality and the unbridled exploitation of natural resources coexist – a paradoxical paradise where progress and inequality collide. In Portugal, paradise is often symbolised by beaches and coastal landscapes, but this reality also encompasses urban development pressures, property speculation and overtourism, whilst the interior faces a sharp demographic decline.
Far from the idea of a harmonious utopia, our aim with this analysis is to understand the role of architecture as an agent of landscape transformation and to contribute to a better future, where architecture is central to building positive solutions and collective action – echoing Carlo Ratti’s challenge – ‘one place, one solution’; harnessing all the intelligence around us.
The project proposes an installation that functions as a technological, architectural and artistic device, creating an immersive environment and an interactive sensory experience for the public. The proposal aims to raise awareness and prompt reflection on the relationship between human action and nature. This theme is explored in *Atlas*, where architecture emerges as a vehicle for the harmonious construction of the contemporary landscape – Paradise.
