The research project “REVIVE: The threads of the past weaving the future: The colors from the Royal Textile Factory of Covilhã, 1764-1850“, dedicated to the study, recovery, and reinterpretation of historical dyeing recipes and textile history in Portugal, marked the conclusion of its work with its final symposium, featuring presentations, practical workshops, study visits to the woollen industry, a theatre play in Serra da Estrela, and a final exhibition. The event took place between 14 and 18 July at the Wool Museum of the University of Beira Interior, in Covilhã.

The Landscape, Heritage and Territory Laboratory (Lab2PT) of the University of Minho played a prominent role in the event’s scientific and cultural programming, reflecting the work developed throughout the project in coordination with the other partner institutions.

On the first day of the symposium, 14 July, Lab2PT’s participation featured in the morning session with a presentation of results on historical dyeing materials and technologies. Joana Sequeira (assistant researcher at Lab2PT/IN2PAST) and Luís Gonçalves Ferreira (PhD researcher at Lab2PT/IN2PAST) presented the paper entitled “Matérias corantes da Real Fábrica de Panos da Covilhã: origens, preços e usos (1764–1805)” [Dyestuffs of the Royal Textile Factory of Covilhã: origins, prices, and uses (1764–1805)] and Luís Gonçalves Ferreira presented a paper dedicated to the theme “Os segredos de uma cor: a tecnologia do preto flamengo no Regimento da Fábrica dos Panos (Portugal, 1573-1690)”.

The practical and artistic cross-pollination side of the research driven by Lab2PT continued on 17 July. Mónica Faria (lecturer at the School of Architecture, Art and Design of the University of Minho and integrated researcher at Lab2PT/IN2PAST), led the collective workshop “Da ovelha à paisagem: oficina artística com as cores do arco-íris” [From sheep to landscape: artistic workshop with the colours of the rainbow].

On the same day, the official opening of the temporary exhibition “Os fios do passado a tecer o futuro. As cores da Real Fábrica de Panos da Covilhã, 1764-1850″ [The threads of the past weaving the future. The colours of the Royal Textile Factory of Covilhã, 1764-1850] took place at the Royal Textile Factory site, which included a guided tour of the five panels produced by the project’s research team.

The gathering closed a multidisciplinary journey uniting history, chemistry, conservation, and design in safeguarding national textile heritage, projecting knowledge of past materials and recipes towards more sustainable practices in the present and future.
