Between 8 and 16 September, an archaeological intervention will be carried out at the site of As Torres, where a bastion from the period of the Guerra da Restauração (1640-1668) was identified in 2023. The project, funded by the Regional Department of Culture, Language and Youth of the Galician Regional Government, will be carried out by Rebeca Blanco-Rotea, a researcher at Lab2PT/IN2PAST, and by the Archaeology Unit of University of Minho. The aim is to characterise and date this structure, as well as to understand its relationship with the communication route between Goián and Tui, which was used to cut off the Portuguese army in 1663 when it took the town of Goián in Galicia.

This study is part of our researcher’s investigation into the fortified Galician-Portuguese border in the 17th century. In addition, the project is part of a Xuventude volunteer camp, in which volunteers aged between 18 and 30 will participate in a heritage education initiative in which we are participating from the University of Minho. The activities will be complemented by guided tours of the site and the fortified surroundings, and a series of lectures to be held in the afternoons.

Coordination: Xurxo Salgado, New Media Group (University of Santiago de Compostela); Rebeca Blanco-Rotea (Lab2PT/IN2PAST, UMinho)
Participants: Rebeca Blanco-Rotea (Lab2PT/IN2PAST), Francisco Andrade (Archaeology Unit, UMinho), Diego Machado (ICS, UMinho)
