Diego Machado (UAUM/Lab2PT/IN2PAST) and Santiago Pereira (ICS/UMinho) will participate in the IV Transcultural Journeys from the Ancient Near East to East Asia, organized by the Centre for Humanistic Studies of the University of Minho, between 27 and 29 May.
The paper to be presented consists of an economic analysis of the Amarna International System, associated with the diplomatic relations between the kingdoms of the Eastern Mediterranean in the late Bronze Age, whose royal correspondence reveals important trade networks, particularly involving goods such as gold and lapis lazuli.
The presenters argue, however, that the content expressed in these correspondences, given the status of their communicants, ultimately obscures a more fundamental requirement in the constitution of these societies, namely the need to obtain bronze alloys, which materially sustained these civilizations.
