The meeting “Uniting knowledge: Pottery and Clay figures”, part of the exploratory project financed by IN2PAST 2LEGACY, is organized by Lab2PT in partnership with the HERCULES Laboratory, with the support of the Barcelos City Council. The meeting constitutes the first public presentation of the project’s results and a space for the exchange of knowledge between researchers, institutions, ceramists and dollmakers. May 16th will be a day of communications and will take place in the auditorium of the Pottery Museum, in Barcelos, with contributions from Lab2PT (University of Minho), HERCULES (University of Évora), CRIA (NOVA University of Lisbon), Municipality of Estremoz, Museum of Natural History and Science of the University of Porto and Museu D. Diogo de Sousa (MMP). The 17th will be a day of visiting several local potteries and doll makers.
The first day will be dedicated to a set of nine presentations by members of the 2LEGACY team and collaborators of this exploratory project funded by IN2PAST, which explores the role of endogenous clay in traditional ceramic production, both historically, based on the legacy of the French chemist Charles Lepierre – who, in 1898, published Estudo Chimico e Technologico sobre a Ceramica Portugueza Moderna –, and in contemporary practices.
Using archival documentation and publications, Lab2PT – University of Minho / IN2PAST researcher Isabel Maria Fernandes will trace the history of the gift of Lepierre’s Portuguese ceramics collection to the Sèvres Museum in France, while the project’s lead researcher (IR), Mathilda Coutinho (HERCULES – University of Évora / IN2PAST), will focus on the material study of the collection to explore how this legacy can enhance and inspire traditional ceramic practices.
CRIA – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST researcher Sónia Mota Ribeiro collected testimonies from Estremoz and Barcelos to address the relationship between raw materials and artisans. Participants will also be able to discuss the importance of chemical analysis of archaeological ceramics (Fernando Castro, DEM – University of Minho), historical notes on Estremoz faience (Hugo Guerreiro, Museum/Municipality of Estremoz and CIDEHUS – University of Évora), the illustration of ceramic production in the 19th century in Portugal (Rita Gaspar, Museum of Natural History and Science of the University of Porto), the crossing of analytical and documentary results (Ana Fonseca, Museum/Municipality of Estremoz), memories of the pottery of Coimbrões, Vila Nova de Gaia (Manuela Ribeiro, Porto City Council) and the ceramics in the collections of the D. Diogo de Sousa Archaeology Museum, in Braga (Maria José Sousa and Cristina Braga, D. Diogo de Sousa Museum / Museums and Monuments of Portugal).
IN2PAST participants: Isabel Maria Fernandes (Lab2PT – University of Minho / IN2PAST), Mathilda Coutinho (HERCULES – University of Évora / IN2PAST) and Sónia Mota Ribeiro (CRIA – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST)
Other intervenients: Ana Fonseca (Estremoz Museum – Municipality of Estremoz), Fernando Castro (DEM – University of Minho), Hugo Guerreiro (Estremoz Museum – Municipality of Estremoz / CIDEHUS – University of Évora), Manuela Ribeiro (Porto City Council), Maria José Sousa and Cristina Braga (D.
