The 90 Seconds of Science program broadcast, on May 5, 2026, an interview with Filipe Brandão, an integrated researcher at Lab2PT/IN2PAST and the School of Architecture, Art and Design at the University of Minho, about a project that aims to create prefabricated and demountable construction systems, integrating 3D printing and robotic manufacturing with advanced digital models.
This research combines additive manufacturing methods, such as 3D printing, with traditional methods, and focuses on creating “design-to-production” systems that allow for full integration with BIM (Building Information Modeling) models.
This will allow architects and engineers to use these tools to develop modular buildings without needing in-depth knowledge of 3D printing or robotics.
Furthermore, this project defines design criteria and rules that can be shared with industry, promoting the emergence of new sustainable and circular construction solutions in the market.
The Casais Chair in ‘Construction in the Digital Age’ is funded by the Casais Group and the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
