The chapter “Serious Games as Pedagogical Practice(s) for Sustainability Education” presents the application of the TIP methodology – Territory, Intervention and Proposal -, developed and tested since 2022 in different curricular units of the degrees in Geography and Planning and in Civil Protection and Territorial Management, at the University of Minho.
The experience analyzed was carried out in the 2023/2024 academic year, within the scope of the Climate Change and Civil Protection curricular unit. The project challenged students to analyze the territory, identify vulnerabilities associated with extreme heat and transform the knowledge produced into intervention and communication proposals aimed at communities.
The territorial analysis of the municipalities of Felgueiras and Vila Nova de Famalicão was linked to the creation of serious games designed to communicate climate risks and promote reflection on possible adaptation measures. Conceived, tested, and presented by the students themselves, the games sought to bring academic work closer to public institutions and local communities, demonstrating the potential of active and participatory methodologies for teaching sustainability and adaptation to climate change.
