Marta Lobo de Araújo, Associate Professor with Tenure in the History Department of the ICS at UMinho and an integrated researcher at Lab2PT/IN2PAST, is the new director of Bracara Augusta Magazine.
Bracara Augusta Magazine celebrates its 75th anniversary with a new look and, for the first time, under the direction of a woman. From now on, in addition to a modern image, in line with other magazines in the field, Bracara Augusta will also have a digital version.
Another new feature is the inclusion of works in Spanish, French and English.
Throughout its history, more than 500 Portuguese authors have published 1,352 titles. For the special edition of these 75 years, work began in September 2024 and culminates on July 14 with the presentation and launch of the magazine.
At Campus Verbal, the magazine’s new director, Marta Lobo de Araújo, confided that the new magazine “will be a surprise, a feast for the eyes and at the same time an invitation to read the articles”. Noting that it is a magazine “completely different” from the versions we have known until today, the person in charge maintains that it is a “very appealing edition in visual terms”.
Marta Lobo de Araújo also admits that Revista Bracara Augusta “was in a bad moment” and was not very popular. Therefore, these 75 years also represent “something substantially new, that follows the demands and rigor of current publications, but that at the same time does not lose the matrix that the magazine had”. A magazine that opens up to a wider audience without distorting the magazine’s symbolic capital. She therefore believes that it may be sought out by an audience “less prepared for issues of science and culture, but interested in the history, culture, archaeology and heritage of their city and region”.
The director of Bracara Augusta Magazine also believes that the city of Braga, as an “archaeological city that coexists with a modern and contemporary city, presents a lot of material to be worked on, to be written and to be read” in future editions.
Another new feature is, of course, the female editorship, which is also an “important step”. “On the one hand, it shows the weight of responsibility that comes with inheriting a 75-year-old legacy, but at the same time, it is a huge challenge for someone who seeks to take Bracara Augusta a step forward in this area. The fact that they invited a woman for the first time also gives me some pleasure, in the sense that it shows that the City of Braga is in line with what our times demand regarding the place that women occupy in society”, she says.
In 2025, Bracara Augusta Magazine will be available in bookstores in Braga, on the internet, and also in other points of sale throughout the country, locations yet to be announced by the city of Braga.
In addition to the different content, the graphic image has been modernized. The Bracara Augusta magazine will also feature a very young line of researchers and historians. In the meantime, all volumes will be available in digital format.
