The Archaeological Heritage of Braga: Revisiting the past and present to think about the future
Lecture with Manuela Martins, Emeritus Professor at the University of Minho and integrated researcher at Lab2PT/IN2PAST.
A reflection on the contributions of archaeology to the knowledge, memory, and urban heritage of Braga, within the scope of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the city’s Archaeological Field.
This lecture revisits half a century of research that has revealed, protected, and valued the archaeological heritage of the city. Throughout these decades, urban archaeology has allowed for a better understanding of the historical evolution of Braga, bringing to light vestiges that enrich the reading of its urban fabric and reinforce the community’s heritage awareness. This reflection will seek to highlight the central role that these interventions have played in the construction of knowledge about the city, emphasizing contributions ranging from the identification of fundamental structures for understanding Roman Braga to the interpretation of medieval and contemporary transformations. By revisiting the past and the present, the conference thus opens the way to thinking about the future of urban archaeology in Braga.
Free admission, limited to the capacity of the space.
