Santiago de Compostela (Galicia, Spain), declared a World Heritage City in 1985 and one of the most important pilgrimage centres in Christianity, and continues to attract a large number of pilgrims to this day. However, the city of Santiago was formed throughout the Early and Late Middle Ages from small population centres and, above all, from a political-religious decision that played an important role in the reconfiguration of powers during the Early Middle Ages in the north and north-west of the Iberian Peninsula. In this work we will analyse the configuration of the city between the 9th century and the end of the Middle Ages, its urban planning and the fundamental role of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in this configuration. We will also analyse the role of archaeology in understanding the city of Santiago.
