Lab2PT/IN2PAST doctoral researcher Tânia Ferreira and Lab2PT/IN2PAST integrated researcher Alexandra Esteves participated in the event with the presentation “Emotions and confidences of Júlio de Matos about Porto and its institutions – 19th-20th Centuries”.
The aim of this paper is to analyze a set of letters that Júlio de Matos wrote to his nephew and sister after moving to Lisbon, following an institutional conflict with the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Porto regarding the Law on Assistance to the Mentally Ill of 1911. These letters allow us direct contact with the doctor’s emotions and feelings, in what is a process of catharsis in the face of how he was treated by the Misericórdia of Porto, not only in this process, but also in his long relationship with the institution’s management during the almost thirty years he was director of the Conde de Ferreira Mentally Ill Hospital.
