Projects approved within the scope of the 3rd Edition of the Call for Financing of Exploratory Projects of IN2PAST 2024/2025

Four projects, 32 researchers, seven research units.
The objective of the IN2PAST Exploratory Project Financing Competition is to contribute to the development of scientific knowledge in the fields of Cultural Heritage, Arts and Collective Memory, and their intersections with the themes of sustainability and territory, envisioning and conducting the research of the Associated Laboratory (LA) to strengthen the use of scientific knowledge for the benefit of society.
This competition also aims to contribute to the creation of the research agendas of the IN2PAST Thematic Lines, reinforcing the articulation and complementarity of this research with that of the Research Groups of the seven Research & Development Units that make up the LA in the aforementioned domains.
With a maximum duration of 12 months, all projects must begin in September 2024.
Projects approved within the scope of the 3rd Edition of the Call for Financing of Exploratory Projects of IN2PAST 2024/2025
1. “Exploring the role of raw materials in Portuguese ceramic crafts to bring Lepierre’s legacy into the future/2LEGACY”
The 2LEGACY project aims to explore the role of endogenous clay in traditional ceramic production, both historically, based on the legacy of the French chemist Charles Lepierre – who in 1898 published the Estudos Chimico e Technologico sobre a Ceramica Portugueza Moderna –, and in contemporary practices, with the cities of Estremoz and Barcelos serving as “living laboratories to explore knowledge-based strategies that value heritage and regenerate artisanal production”.

2. “InDigit: The indigenous peoples of the South American Lowlands and the digital transition in European museums”
The InDigit project aims to develop a digital repository prototype, in collaboration with consultants from the Kamayurá indigenous people, who live in the Alto Xingu, in Brazil, based on the collection of this people located at the National Museum of Ethnology, in Portugal. With the purpose of contributing to the collaborative construction of the digital sphere through a plurality of perspectives, the main objective is to examine the differences and similarities between the theories and practices of the Museum and the Kamayurá, in terms of classification systems, access protocols , concepts of property, care regimes and notions of temporality.

3. “ARIA: Art, Rhythm, Intonaco, Analytics – An Interdisciplinary Study of King João IV’s Musical Library at Vila Viçosa”
The Musical Library of D. João IV in the Paço Ducal of Vila Viçosa is the focus of the ARIA project, which aims to study how interdisciplinary methodologies from history, art history, science and technology can help preserve and understand cultural heritage, what knowledge can be obtained through the integration of architectural and functional analysis, acoustic studies and the characterization of the musical repertoire, and what are the implications and best practices for the use of advanced digital technologies in the preservation, study and digital dissemination of spaces and artifacts historic buildings, such as the Musical Library and its wall paintings.

4. The Romanesque-style rural church of Portugal: An initial stride towards the complete digitalization by Heritage-BIM. The case study of S. João de Calvos (Guimarães, 13th Cent. AD)”
The project aims to produce a detailed 3D digital model of the interior and exterior of the Romanesque-style rural church of S. João de Calvos (Guimarães, 13th century), based on HBIM (Heritage – Building Information Modelling) tools, capable of integrating sets of geometric and non-geometric data, and made available online, contributing to the safeguarding, conservation and enjoyment of these buildings.
