The book “Innovating from tradition. Strategies for the Reinterpretation of Vernacular Techniques for a Sustainable Future”, edited by Mónica Alcindor Huelva, has just been published. It is the result of a BIP (Blended Intensive Programme) held in July 2025 in Vila Nova de Cerveira.

 

Lab2PT/IN2PAST researcher Rebeca Blanco-Rotea has contributed an article to the volume entitled “Construction systems and techniques of the fortified architecture of Vila Nova de Cerveira”, in which she explores the fortified landscape of the northern Hispano-Portuguese border, shaped by the construction systems used during the War of Restoration (1640–1668).

 

Drawing on Heidegger’s concept of building and Derrida’s deconstruction, it approaches architecture as a historical document and a human transformation of space.

The research, carried out in two phases (2003–2015 and 2016–present), identifies a diverse network of 17th-century fortifications that adapted to evolving defensive needs. Through the concept of system, the study highlights the relationship between human action and physical space.

The medieval castle of Vila Nova de Cerveira exemplifies the transition from medieval stone defences to early modern bastioned architecture, revealing the material and technical evolution of military construction in the Minho region.
