The Archaeology Unit of the University of Minho (UAUM) will move to the renovated Convent of São Francisco in Real, Braga, enhancing research, conservation, and promotion projects in archaeology and culture in the region and the country.
The installation ceremony in this new location will take place on November 24th at 2:30 PM, with the presence of the Mayor of Braga, João Rodrigues, the Rector of UMinho, Rui Vieira de Castro, and the Director of UAUM, Maria do Carmo Ribeiro (Lab2PT/IN2PAST), among other figures.
The Convent of São Francisco underwent a renovation as part of a partnership between the CCDR-N, the Municipality of Braga, and UMinho, with an investment of 2.5 million euros.
Recently awarded at the Real Estate Awards organized by SIC Notícias and Jornal Expresso, the project – designed by the Center for Studies of the School of Architecture, Art and Design of UMinho and authored by architect Maria Manuel Oliveira (Lab2PT/IN2PAST) – offers an interpreted tour circuit through the various buildings and houses the UAUM, which is responsible for educational services, tour content, and permanent and temporary exhibitions. The space will also house the future Cávado Archaeological Center, as part of a partnership with the Cávado Intermunicipal Community and the Braga City Hall.
UAUM is one of the eight cultural units of University of Minho. Founded 48 years ago, it is headquartered on Avenida Central in Braga (next to the Nogueira da Silva Museum and later in the Congregados Building). It focuses on the advancement and affirmation of archaeological knowledge, especially in Minho and Northern Portugal. It provides services to the community in projects for the defense, enhancement, and dissemination of heritage. It supports training in Archaeology and History, as well as undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Minho. It has a team of specialists in various fields, in addition to technicians and collaborators on projects dating back to Prehistory, in partnership with institutions from several countries, and regularly publishes the results of its studies.
The UAUM has already been awarded the Medal of Merit – Gold Grade by the Municipality of Braga.
