Around the Old Book: second-hand bookstores, booksellers, publishers, bibliophiles and other book lovers | Cultural History Cycle
The Cultural History Cycle will take place between April and May 2025, comprising a set of open classes developed in collaboration between the Master’s Degree in History and the History Department of the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Minho and Lab2PT/IN2PAST, under the coordination of Fátima Moura Ferreira.
The first open class is entitled “Around the Old Book: second-hand bookstores, booksellers, publishers, bibliophiles and other book lovers” and will be taught by Francisco Brito.
Biography:
Graduated in History from the University of Minho (2008). Completed the curricular component of the Master’s Degree in History – Cultures and Powers (2009). FCT Research Fellow at the CITCEM Population History Group (2010/2011). He studies Modern and Contemporary History, with a particular interest in political, social and military history, as well as the history of books and reading. About books, reading and libraries he published the following articles: Brief news of the existence of a Reading Room in Guimarães during the Vintismo, in the magazine Veduta (2017) and The numerous and well-chosen bookstore of Frei Domingos da Soledade Sillos, in São Torcato: pilgrimage to an endless valley and São Torcato: history, devotion and heritage (C.M.G., 2023).
Researcher, author and bookseller, always looking to find interesting and old books, he takes care of them almost full time, having founded Livraria Cólofon in 2013. Since then, he has worked with numerous collectors, researchers and bibliophiles, as well as with several Portuguese and foreign institutions.
