The bids in the feminist movement and the emergence of women’s history (19th–21st centuries)
On April 7th, at 6 pm, there will be an open lecture entitled “The bids in the feminist movement and the emergence of women’s history (19th–21st centuries)”, given by researcher Andreia Nunes (ICS/UMinho/Lab2PT/IN2PAST), as part of the Political Themes in History of Presente Time course unit.
Synopsis: Women’s struggle for rights has evolved from political demands (the right to vote) to complex debates on intersectionality, the oppression of women and gender-based violence. This trajectory of social demands began to find a place in historiography from the 1970s onwards. Traditional political history focused primarily on the political sphere and the achievements of prominent male figures, but the emergence of Nouvelle Histoire brought about a fundamental shift by incorporating previously silenced groups (women, the poor and workers). This new paradigm developed along two strands: Women’s History (focused on recovering women’s contributions and participation throughout history) and Gender History (committed to a relational analysis of the actions of women and men in society). The central aim is to analyse the development of these areas of research and the different phases of the feminist movement.
This open lecture is organized by the History Department of ICS, in collaboration with Lab2PT/IN2PAST, under the coordination of Bruno Madeira.
Free admission.
