IN2PAST Conversation Dance and Politics | “Researching Dance – Questioning the World”, as part of the "dança não dança" exhibition
Dance through the eyes of Contemporary History, Cultural Studies, Art History or Anthropology is the motto for the talk ‘Investigar as Danças – Interrogar o Mundo’ (‘Researching Dance – Questioning the World’), on December 4th, at 6 pm, in the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s Lower Floor Gallery, in Lisbon, organised by the ‘dança não dança’ team in co-operation with IN2PAST, as part of the exhibition ‘dança não dança – Archaeologies of new dance in Portugal’ (‘dança não dança – Arqueologias da nova dança em Portugal’).
With free admission (subject to capacity), this meeting invites researchers interested in 20th century Cultural History and Art History, artists and other audiences attentive to the intersections between dance and politics to talk with Francisco Mendes, researcher at Lab2PT – University of Minho / IN2PAST, CRIA – Iscte / IN2PAST researcher Maria José Fazenda and CHAM – NOVA FCSH researcher Maria João Castro.
The National Ballet of Guinea-Bissau as a revolutionary movement for the nationalisation of post-independence Guinean culture will be the focus of Francisco Mendes‘ participation [’Dançar as Nações – The History of the National Ballet of Guinea-Bissau (1975-2025)’]. Maria José Fazenda will help us to understand the singularity of theatrical dance practices in Portugal and the diversity of its manifestations in the country’s context [‘Dança (Portugal) teatral’] and Maria João Castro will discuss ‘the vision of the double game of the power of dance, and the dance of power’ (‘Dança e Poder’).
The exhibition ‘dança não dança – Arqueologias da nova dança em Portugal’ (‘dança não dança – Archaeologies of new dance in Portugal’), also with free admission (with a ticket), can be visited until January 13th, 2025, from 10 am to 6 pm (closed on Tuesdays), at the Gulbenkian’s Lower Floor Gallery. Curated by researchers Ana Bigotte Vieira (IHC – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST) and Ana Dinger (Research Centre for Communication and Culture, UCP), and Carlos Manuel Oliveira and João dos Santos Martins (Associação Parasita), the exhibit was produced by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and Associação Parasita.
IN2PAST invites researchers and other audiences to get to know the initiatives we develop in non-academic places where we spend an important part of our working time, be they museums, archives or archaeological sites, among many other territories and landscapes we co-inhabit.
