Launch of the publication PORTAS e PRÁTICAS | INTERMÉDIOS - Visual essays dedicated to reuse in construction
Lab2PT invites all interested parties to participate in the launch session of the publication PORTAS, which, along with PRÁTICAS, constitutes the first two publications in the series of visual essays dedicated to reuse in construction, INTERMÉDIOS.
The event will feature a brief presentation of each publication, followed by an open conversation with NADA NOVO, designers Joana & Mariana, and authors of contributions included in the publication.
INTERMÉDIOS: A series of collective visual essays, in no predefined order, dedicated to the theme of reusing salvaged construction components.
PORTAS: Doors, originally designed to establish boundaries or passageways, are one of the most frequently and diversely reused architectural elements in the construction world.
This essay, intentionally confined to Portugal, explores some examples of these door reuse cultures, highlighting the stories of their previous lives and new applications.
PRÁTICAS: Reuse practices, inherently linked to construction itself, have persisted resiliently through various expressions: cultural, aesthetic, economic, technological, social, or political. This essay presents examples of reuse based on historical heritage value, vernacular culture, or informal use of opportunity, conceived within formal architectural design methods or self-built. All of these cases originate exclusively in Portugal, seeking to highlight the diversity of local approaches.
NADA NOVO is an association that promotes the reuse of building components and materials and explores the cultural challenges of its application.
Founded in 2023 in Portugal, NADA NOVO develops activities with industry, academia, and the public sphere, including research on reuse in traditional, contemporary, and future construction. The association seeks to bridge the gap between public entities, construction professionals, supply chains, and the general public. It uses a transdisciplinary approach, with open and inclusive participatory activities, including workshops, experimental construction, training, exhibitions, and publications.
NADA NOVO aims to contribute to the creation of networks and mapping of demolition contractors, suppliers, artisans, and technicians involved in the reuse of building components.
The association is also active in the visual and performing arts to reach more diverse audiences.
NADA NOVO was born following the mutual perception of the founders— Cláudia Escaleira and Jonny Pugh, both with practical and academic experience—of the need for action, promotion, reflection and debate on the reuse of construction components.
