In search of a voice and an image: trajectories, discourses and representations of women's political participation in Portuguese democracy (1974-2006)

Abstract

This research focuses on the study of the exercise of political positions by women in Portugal from the democratic revolution to the approval of the parity law (1974-2006). The main objective of this work is to characterize the universe of women who held and ran for positions of political elite. It is intended to know and analyze the individual paths, evaluating the social, political and cultural capital they had. The feminine-feminist problematic will be discussed in conjunction with the study of women's organizations of parties and their political programs. An analytical mapping of all women who ran in presidential, legislative and European elections will also be carried out, whether or not they were elected. Methodologically, the study is based on the construction of socio-historical and prosopography profiles, based on the critical exploration of written and audiovisual documentation and interviews that contribute to a deepening of the knowledge of the transformations of Portuguese society between the 1960s and the 2000s.
