Dwelling, from detail to space: aporias and continuities in the drawings of Carvalho Araújo

Abstract

This research takes the work of Carvalho Araújo as a starting point for reflecting on the house and on the ways in which dwelling is constructed. Through the analysis of a selection of houses designed over a period of thirty years, it seeks to trace the design process and understand how certain ideas move across different scales, from detail to space, and how they persist, transform, or take on new forms throughout the design process. In this context, detail is understood in a broad sense: not merely as a material or constructive resolution, but as a gesture, relationship, or decision capable of revealing a way of thinking about architecture. The design process, observed through drawings, models, conversations, and the houses themselves, provides a means of understanding the relationships established between body, matter, space, and landscape. Rather than seeking to identify a language or a set of rules, the research aims to understand, through these houses, the continuities and tensions that run through Carvalho Araújo’s work, and to explore how, between detail and space, an idea of dwelling is gradually constructed.
