Project Title
Religious Identities: Franciscan Male Convents in Northwest Portugal (16th–18th Centuries)
Abstract
The present doctoral thesis focuses on the study of Franciscanism in the northwest of Portugal, with particular emphasis on the analysis of male convents between the XVI and XVIII centuries. During this period, Franciscan institutions not only served as fundamental spiritual and religious centres but also played a decisive role in the social organisation, economic practices, and power relations of the region. The aim is to investigate the ways of life of the friars, as well as the rules and laws that governed their daily existence and the internal functioning of these spaces. The study will also encompass the experiences of the Franciscans within the context of their interactions and conflicts with various religious and secular entities, analysing the political and economic implications of these relationships and the ways in which these institutions mobilised landed and movable resources for their maintenance. The research is limited to the analysis of the Seraphic convents, thus avoiding overlap with other Religious Orders present in the area of study, and focusing on convents whose realities remain largely unexplored, thereby offering a deeper understanding of the role and impact of the Franciscan friars and their way of life within the social structure, whose concrete reality in this part of Portugal remains little known.
