Project Title

Equines in open-air rock art in Northwest Portugal: reflections of an occupation of pre- and proto-historic landscapes.

Abstract

This study aims to increase the knowledge of rock art in north-western Portugal through the analysis of equid engravings on open-air rock surfaces, located between the Minho River valley to the north, the Ave River to the south, and the Tâmega River to the east. The research seeks to identify and characterize different types of representations, analyze their spatial organization, and understand the relationship between these sites, the surrounding landscape, and other archaeological contexts, producing an interpretation of their social, symbolic, and cultural significance throughout the region’s prehistory and protohistory.
