Project Title
Artificial lighting in Minho (1830–1950): history, memories and heritage
Abstract
The research aims to study the history of artificial lighting in the Minho region, encompassing the districts of Viana do Castelo and Braga, between 1830 and 1950. It seeks to analyse the evolution of artificial nighttime lighting both in the private sphere — namely in domestic, working, and other everyday contexts — and in the public sphere, particularly in relation to public lighting and festive illuminations. The study aims to understand the development of these forms of lighting, considering the techniques and technologies employed, from systems based on natural oils to the widespread adoption of electricity, as well as their respective chronologies and geographies of implementation and use. It also intends to examine the artisanal and industrial modes of production associated with lighting devices and infrastructures, together with the impact that developments in this field had on society at the time.
