Project Title

The spaces of Psychiatry in Portugal. Critical trajectories, an investigation in Architecture

Abstract

This project aims to investigate psychiatric spaces in Portugal, based on the premise, advanced by Contemporary Psychiatry, that social, collective, and spatial dimensions play a role in the therapeutic and emancipatory processes of people with lived experience of mental illness. Architectural research, which has so far been absent from this debate, is called upon to participate, and it is here that the project finds its main relevance. Focusing on the Portuguese context, the research draws on the tools of Architecture in an interdisciplinary cross with Psychiatry and History, in order to approach the subject through the architectural analysis of psychiatric spaces. This is developed through a literature review and participatory research on case studies conducted in three psychiatric services with distinct spatial configurations, as well as an Atlas: an instrument of recording, synthesis, and experimentation, constructed progressively throughout the research process. The outcome will be an Atlas of Psychiatric Spaces in Portugal, illustrating and communicating the results of the investigation.
