Project Title
Impacts of distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic: Contributions from geographic analysis in rural and transition territories
Abstract
The pandemic caused by COVID-19 is triggering several investigations in multiple areas, namely, in education. In this context, in Portugal there are currently no studies focused on in evaluating this aspect in the teaching of Geography, therefore, the present investigation is perspected within Geography as innovative in the national context. Likewise, the results will allow us to understand the effects to serve as a basis for new pandemic contexts in order to provide responses more efficiently. This research proposal aims to understand how distance learning, provoked by COVID-19, affected learning in the subject of Geography, namely, in terms of of Physical Geography. With this study, we intend for students to reflect on their gaps caused by distance learning and that if in the future this teaching modality is forced to return, the teachers will know which strategies are to be adopted in order to better prevent knowledge from not being consolidated. To achieve this end, we will apply questionnaires and focus groups for teachers and students, as well as resources and activities related to augmented reality and new geographic information technologies. The study will take place in the Alberto Sampaio school grouping located in the municipality of Braga and in the groups of schools in the municipalities of Amares and Vieira do Minho. These counties were selected with the aim of making a comparison between an urban municipality (Braga), a transition municipality (Amares) and a municipality with rural characteristics (Vieira do Minho).
