Project Title
GIS and Digital Twins for more efficient planning and management in the municipality of Felgueiras.
Abstract
Digital Twins are a crucial emerging technology today for digital transformation and smart operations in municipal management. This research will focus on analyzing the potential and limitations of developing a Digital Twin in the municipality of Felgueiras, which will serve as a benchmark for other municipalities with similar characteristics. To understand the current state of the art, we will conduct a nationwide survey via an online questionnaire and a local survey via interviews, in order to obtain a more realistic picture of the situation in Portugal. Similarly, we also intend to assess the perceptions and willingness of municipal technicians and leaders to implement more technologically advanced geographic solutions in their daily practices. Finally, we hope that this pioneering study will lead to the development of an efficient and streamlined practical model to facilitate engagement among different users and simplify the fundamental procedures involved in the day-to-day management of a municipality. I aim to demonstrate that data that is centralized, aggregated, and available in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can bring about significant improvements within an organization. The selected study area (the municipality of Felgueiras), aside from the fact that little to nothing exists on it, was chosen because it is where I live and where I practice my profession. I would like to contribute to the consolidation of the municipality’s GIS and, perhaps, make Felgueiras a national model, helping many other Portuguese municipalities that use and need geographic information on a daily basis to replicate and implement it.
