Project Title

The code of master masons: comparative study of stonemason marks in Alto Minho from the 11th to 14th centuries

Abstract

This project examines medieval stonemasons' marks in "Alto Minho", a region populate in monuments from the Middle Ages, tied to border consolidation. It uses a methodological approach combining History, Archaeology of Architecture, and Geology to contextualize these marks to the buildings' construction phase. By selecting buildings based on chronological, architectural, and social criteria, the project aims to understand the specialization and mobility of master stonemasons and the organization of construction activities. It combines historical, documentary, architectural, and lithological perspectives, using tools and techniques from written source analysis, archaeometry, and information systems
