Analysis of Approaches to Urban Landscape Management

Abstract

This research undertakes a comparative analysis of the management of World Heritage cities in Brazil (Rio de Janeiro, Paraty and Diamantina) and Portugal (Évora, Guimarães and Porto). Its aim is to identify and clarify the methodological approaches that address cultural landscape considerations, whether through legal, morphological or urban planning frameworks. The research is based on the premise that UNESCO management plans adopt different methodologies depending on the year in which the nomination was submitted, and that they do not always address all aspects of the city through the lens of cultural landscape management. The study therefore seeks to identify, through the selected sample, similarities and differences in the approaches adopted by the institutions responsible for managing these sites.
