Project title
Living in Montreal 1825-1935: the emergence and transformation of a multi-family residential typology in Montreal
Keywords
History, morphology of architecture, design process
Scientific framework
In 1935, over 70% of Montrealers lived in two- to three-story buildings, composed of two to six superimposed apartments, accessible by external staircases—a distinctive and original element. The book's design is based on various sources (doctoral dissertations, plans, essays, theses, articles) framed by the fundamental, almost contemporary texts of Melvin Charney (1971) and Fernando Távora (1963). The morphological evolution integrates forms inherited from French (1608-1760), British (1760-1867) origins and the influence of the United States after 1890. This urban space represents the unique process of producing the built environment and, at the same time, shapes the collective urban experience that is configured as a landscape, a heritage, and a social and material territory.
