FCT Mobility Incoming Programme This joint research project proposes a comparative analysis between Brazil and Portugal, focusing on the formation and institutionalization of public policies for maternal and child health during the 1930s and 1940s—a period of consolidation of the authoritarian regimes of the Portuguese Estado Novo (1933–1974) and the Brazilian Estado Novo (1937–1945). The study will examine how medical discourse and hygienist knowledge were mobilized as instruments of state intervention and political legitimation, using methodologies of comparative history and discourse analysis. The mission will allow for the identification of convergences and singularities in the construction of maternal and child protection policies under authoritarian regimes, contributing to the consolidation of a comparative documentary base and to the strengthening of Luso-Brazilian scientific cooperation networks in the field of health history.
