2025 - Street Transformations, Rebalancing Ecology and Environment issues in Urban Territories
STREET research explores street transformation projects with the aim of understanding their contribution to sustainable, resilient and ecological urban environments. The research consists of an in-depth study on the processes and street projects implemented in 5 Portuguese municipalities, after the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (UN, 2015).
Its objectives are to identify indicators and design an evaluation tool that support a systematic approach to the transformation of streets and their commitment to a sustainable future.
In the context of the main challenges of contemporary society and its negative environmental impact, the transformation of streets can play a strategic role in rebalancing the social, environmental and mobility components and, consequently, the vocation of public space. At the same time, a structured vision of the adaptation of streets to a new climate context and to the principles of circularity will allow us to understand how issues related to functionality, durability and adaptability are integrated.
The project concludes with the publication and exhibition presenting an overview of 20-25 street projects, providing possible design principles, solutions and approaches for climate adaptability and enhancing the social and natural values of streets.
