2024 - Fernando Távora in Guimarães
Fernando Távora was born on August 25, 1923. If he were still among us, he would have turned 100 years old in 2023. In connection with the celebration of this centenary, the Northern Regional Section of the Order of Architects proposed to the Marques da Silva Foundation and the Universities of Minho , Porto and Coimbra, the planning of a vast program of events. This book is part of this program, entitled Távora 100, integrating a wide range of initiatives, promoted between August 2023 and September 2024.
The School of Architecture, Art and Design of the University of Minho was part of this initiative from the beginning, considering it to a priority purpose. Fernando Távora was a teacher for the majority of our faculty, he was President of the Installation Committee of our Architecture Course, he was a Member of the Scientific Council of our Department and designed (in co-authorship with his son, Bernardo Távora) the building where our Master’s degree program operates. Integrated in Architecture, on the Azurém campus; therefore, our School could not dissociate itself from this tribute. The idea of publishing a book about Fernando Távora’s work in Guimarães emerged, in this context, as an inevitability, given his deep personal connection with the city. This relationship, which began in his childhood, continued throughout his adult life and manifested itself substantially in his professional activity, with fourteen works completed and seven projects not built.
