2024 - Inspiring designers: Mapping as a means to inspire Inclusion through Design (MID)
Promoting inclusion is a cross-cutting objective, associated with several current global challenges. Although it is increasingly recognized by society, the talent and creative potential of designers is rarely channeled into inclusive solutions and the fulfillment of the social role of Design. This paper advocates the dissemination of pedagogical strategies used in the context of Inclusive Design in order to promote a change in attitudes and the training of better designers.
The paper begins by narrating five stories from the author’s experience, constructed based on testimonies and documentary analysis of other good practices of inclusion through Design. These respectively address five topics: Arguments, Pedagogy, Interdisciplinarity, Partnerships and Dissemination. The concerns exposed in the problem are discussed and corroborated by some authors consulted in the literature review: barriers to the use of information and the use of some tools created in the context of Inclusive Design are identified and their suitability for the profile of designers and, in particular, students is questioned.
These reflections led to the proposal of a framework for Inspirational Mapping of Inclusion through Design (MID): a tool organized in two axes that supports the mapping of solutions and opportunities considering variables that promote inclusion from the beginning of the Design process. Designed for the context of education, this proposal aims to inspire and promote communication between people from different areas and levels of education, in a practical, dynamic and visual way – that is, it aims to be a more inclusive tool itself.
